DRINKING ON A DIET

Updated: Dec 6, 2018

If you like to have a drink every now and then, you can still do so without getting off your weight loss journey. What you drink may change, but these cocktails and beers are still super yummy and you won't have to worry about the carbs. That's the thing about alcoholic beverages: they can be full of sugar, which translates to negative carbs. The drinks you'll find here are super low in carbs, so enjoy and drink responsibly!

Wine or Champagne?

Champagne always has a considerably lower amount of carbs than wine.

Best Beers

Big shout out to ruled.me for this insightful (and very pretty) infographic! From this list, I can say Michelob Ultra is in my top three. The entire brand boasts of very few carbs, so try their other flavors, too.

Vodka + Club Soda + Splash of Juice

Juices like grape, cranberry, orange, and pineapple are all pretty standard to have on deck at bars and restaurants. Instead of mixing your vodka with one of these juices (sugar spike!) opt for vodka club soda with a splash of juice instead. Even better: Opt for lime juice or lemon juice instead. My favorite is vodka club soda with lime and mint leaves. Yes!

But, wait... There's more!

VeryWellFit.com has some pretty amazing cocktail recipes that will help keep sugar low. Take a look:

  • Sugar-Free Margarita Recipe: The traditional margarita is hard to pass up when you're enjoying Mexican food, but most of them are very high in sugar. This version has just 6 grams of carbs.

  • Low-Carb Cosmopolitan Recipe: This festive cocktail normally includes lots of sugar from cranberry juice and liqueur.

  • Bloody Mary Recipe: Get a serving of vegetables in your flavorful brunch cocktail. This recipe is appropriate for phase two of the South Beach Diet and includes notes on how to adjust carbs for other low-carb plans.

  • Sugar-Free Whiskey Sour Recipe: Replacing the usual sugar-laden mixers will reduce the calories and the carbs.

  • Low-Carb Collins Recipe: Pre-made Collins mixers have a fair amount of sugar. This recipe can be used for a lower-calorie and lower-carb Tom Collins or vodka Collins.
